About Us

Hi, there. We're kekai Swimwear

Welcome to the World of kekai Swimwear

“kekai” is a stylish swimwear, designed and handmade in Gold Coast Australia by Lee-Anne Hay. She loves being around the beaches and spending time by the water allowing her to develop a strong connection with the sea. kekai swimwear was inspired by her love for minimalistic and timeless fashionable wears. We are focusing on quality not quantity and pieces that last longer.

kekai is targeted at classy women who want to feel confident, comfortable and empowered in their swimwear irrespective of their age or body size. It’s a swimwear line that makes you gorgeous without compromising your originality. Our designs are bold featuring many different cut styles that compliment the delicate curves of the female body. Each kekai swimwear is carefully made with quality fabrics to ensure the maintenance of a unique standard and we have a deep love for the ocean, marine life and the environment. We are constantly improving our sustainably process to become more efficient and reduce our footprint on our planet. We believe in cleaner oceans and hope to make awareness through our sustainable swimwear that every person that purchases is doing something to help our ocean and planet. One person cannot change the world however many can make a difference. We are creating luxurious and stunning pieces of swimwear while ensuring our impact on the planet is minimal. We also want to open up conversations about the impact of fashion on the environment to help drive a change.

Every day approximately 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans. A total of 12 million tonnes a year this equivalent to a truckload a minute.

As a family-owned business, we’re known for keeping up to date with the latest in fashion and we place our customers first in all we do because finding the perfect swimwear for you is all that matters to us. So with our diverse collection of kekai’s cheeky-fun swimwear, both mothers and daughters can now express their personalities without fear.

WHO WE ARE

Meet the Visionary

I’m Lee-Anne Hay, a fun-loving and family-focused woman. I have been fascinated with premium bikinis from my childhood days and this has evolved into a thing of passion for me. While growing up, it’s always been my desire to make women feel radiant and sexy in their own skin and that was the driving force behind the kekai brand as it’s designed with the everyday women in mind. I want them to stand out and be confident and comfortable in their swimwear.

I’m not just here to chase the trends but also to solve other problems of public interest while on the course of getting you in gorgeous swimwear. I grew up around the ocean and I’ve always been concerned about the pollution and how we can have a better marine life. I would like to do my part in making the world go greener while helping the environment.

I continually want to look for new ways to ensure we delivery sustainable and beautiful pieces to produce swimwear with a purpose. It gives us the opportunity to save the marine life and help with the plastic problem.

OUR STORY

Beautiful Bikini's

kekai is a luxurious swimwear label that has been born in Australia on the Gold Coast that makes you feel confident and comfortable irrespective of your body shape. From the dream to reality, Lee-Anne is the creator behind it all. The prints are unique to kekai and each collection has bold prints and colours that stand out from the crowd. We are focusing on quality not quantity and pieces that last longer. All of our scrapes are made into scrunchies or headbands. I have utilized my creativity and passion to bring to life a collection of high-quality swimwear defined by flattering cuts and a love of comfort, combined with timeless classic styles. Look good and feel good knowing you’ve helped towards cleaning up our oceans. It’s about creating great beautiful products and building a community.

I cherish and respect the environment from being privileged to travel to many fantastic places and seeing first-hand the destruction we are placing on the environment and the marine life in our oceans. Over the years swimming with many species of marine life and one thing that was the same in most countries was the rubbish and fishing nets in the ocean and scattered over the beaches we want to celebrate positive steps to lower the impact on the environment which is the driving force behind the label.

You’ll not only love the custom-made Swimwear, but also appreciate its sustainability. So, if you have a strong respect for your environment and want to consciously support the idea of ethical fashion, then, kekai is just the best swimwear for you.

One person cannot change the world however many can make a difference.

Our Approach:

kekai is an independently owned business run by Lee-Anne Hay and her family (an environmentally conscious person who cares deeply for her community and the environment).

At kekai, we are conscious of the fashion industry’s impact on the planet and that’s why we’re devoted to driving the needed change. We are passionate about protecting our beautiful oceans and marine life, which is what inspired me to change the way I do business.

We believe in limitless possibilities and we’ll stop at nothing just to create sustainable and appealing swimwear collections from recycled fabrics.

SAVING OUR OCEANS MARINE LIFE ONE BIKINI AT A TIME

Healthy Seas, A Journey From Waste To Wear

Healthy Seas, a journey from waste to wear, is an initiative that Aquafil founded in 2013 with another business (Star Sock) and an NGO.

The purpose of the initiative is to clean the oceans and seas of marine litter such as derelict fishnets responsible for the needless death of marine animals.

FAO and UNEP estimate that there are 640,000 tons of fishing nets in the oceans. These fishing nets, often called ghost nets, remain adrift for a substantial amount of time (500 years) and are responsible for the accidental capture of whales, turtles, birds and other marine mammals. This problem only continues to get worse each year.

Healthy Seas applies a two-way approach to achieve its mission. First, recovering ghost fishing nets from our seas and second, preventing that waste fishing nets will end up in the marine ecosystem. These prevention actions are implemented with the help of fishermen communities and fish farms as well as with educational programs and events that raise awareness.

The fishing nets recovered in collection points from the sea bed by volunteer divers are sent to Aquafil’s Slovenian regeneration plant. Here, thanks to a unique recycling process, the fishing nets of Healthy Seas, together with other nylon waste material, are regenerated to make first quality nylon yarn called ECONYL®.

This 100% regenerated nylon yarn, coming from waste material, is then used for garments and carpet flooring.

Since 2013, Healthy Seas has recovered an increasing number of discarded fishing nets that were regenerated into the ECONYL® process and collaborated with many of its stakeholders.

Healthy Seas relies on the donation and support of many to achieve its mission and organize diving trips primarily in the Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia, Greece and Italy.

Do you want to come on board and help clean the seas? Join Healthy Seas and become a partner or donate your 1% for the planet to the initiative. Many brands have joined already, supporting the initiative and using the ECONYL® yarn to make more sustainable products that look good and feel good.

On September 22nd, 2019, Healthy Seas was presented with the award for Circular Economy at the 3rd Annual Green Carpet Fashion Awards that closed Milan Fashion Week at the historic Teatro Alla Scala.

Carlo Capasa and Livia Firth said, “The Healthy Seas Initiative deserves to be celebrated for its selfless work to help clean up our oceans, through a dedicated team of volunteers. Importantly, we are championing the collaboration of non-profit and for-profit organizations, to help move us towards this essential goal. The Circular Economy is a topic of growing significance, and the need to preserve our environment through waste recovery and regeneration is pressing. By working with Aquafil, they are helping to close the loop on the urgent waste crisis that we are facing. We honor the fact that such a committed group of people is playing a part in this essential task."

Plastic Recycling & Our Materials We Use

kekai Swimwear – Our Journey Towards Sustainability

Manufacturing

Our sustainable swimwear is designed and handmade in Gold Coast Australia. We strive to minimize the adverse impacts associated with manufacturing in the fashion world and ensure that our products are certified for ethical compliance.  Our materials are also locally sourced to give support to other business around us.

Swimwear Materials

The kekai swimwear fabric is carefully selected with utmost respect for the environment while targeting maximum luxury. kekai’s swimwear is recyclable and the outcome is a beautiful, premium swimwear that resonates with your soul.  We manufacture sustainable swimwear which is made from fishing nets and recycled plastic bottles that have been recovered from the ocean. This fabric is strong, soft and breathable. It is twice as resistant to chlorine, suntan creams and oils. We use this fabric on both inside and outside of all our swimwear. We also reduce landfill wastage by using all the fabric scrapes to make scrunches or headbands.

Printing

Our printed fabrics are all dye-sublimated using environmentally friendly, water-based digital inks, are colour fast and non-fade.

Packaging

Since our environment is at the core of what we do, we use 100% recyclable products packaging throughout our supply chain to minimise our plastic waste. The postal bags we use are made from 100% biodegradable and compostable materials, using plant-based materials like corn starch, rice straw and wheat. These bags break down easily and can be placed in your compost bin.

Cleaning up Oceans

Every choice we make in life has an effect and that’s why whenever you choose the kekai swimwear that’s made from recycled materials, you’re also helping to clean up the oceans and landfills as well as reduce the global warming impact. This implies that your choice comes with sustainable values as it would help to conserve energy, avoid harmful carbon emissions, divert waste from landfills and also save water resources.

The discarded or abandoned fishing nets are often called “ghost nets”, since they continue to catch fish and other marine animals without human involvement. Millions of marine animals, including whales, dolphins, seals, sharks, and turtles suffer and die painful deaths because of these fishing nets. We believe in the cause for a cleaner ocean that makes a difference with new ways to ensure sustainable beautiful pieces to produce swimwear with a purpose. It gives us the opportunity to save the marine life and help with the plastic problem. Walk with us on this path towards sustainability and you’ll never regret it. Remember each swimwear is just as beautiful and unique as the person wearing it.
